1999 Conservation Organization of the Year: Northern Swatara Watershed Association.
The association has assisted in developing wetlands to remediate acid mine drainage, held public tours and conducted a host of conservation projects. Morgan said the group has brought the trout population back to Swatara Creek.
Shadle and Knowles presented the group with $4,000. "We have a lot of appreciation for what you are doing," Shadle said. Another $4,000 was presented to the Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation. The money for the grants came from funds the county received from landfill host fees, according to Shadle.
Robert P. Evanchalk and Kenneth G. Ninkovich accepted the award on behalf of the volunteer group. "I never imagined I'd be fishing for trout in Old Black Creek.' What has happened in the Swatara Watershed seems like a miracle," Ninkovich said.
